BFF Visits Quantum Hash Ventures’ Mining Operation in Lusaka

On April 6th, lead team members from Bitcoin for Fairness Zambia (BFF) visited Quantum Hash Ventures’ Bitcoin mining operation located in Lusaka, Zambia. Quantum Hash Ventures began their mining operations in August 2023, utilizing on-grid power for their Bitcoin mining machines.

During the visit, one of Quantum Hash Ventures’ partners, Andrea, took the BFF team on a comprehensive tour of the facilities. While the team initially encountered loadshedding (planned power outages) upon arrival, they were fortunate to witness the mining operation come alive just before their departure. This turn of events provided a valuable opportunity for the BFF team to experience the actual mining process firsthand.

Looking towards the future, Quantum Hash Ventures has ambitious plans to expand its mining operations within Zambia. Their long-term strategy involves leveraging stranded power generated by mini hydro grids operated by the Rural Electrification Authority (REA). This approach would allow them to contribute to the development of surrounding communities by utilizing excess energy that would otherwise go unused.

It’s important to note that Quantum Hash Ventures is a partner of the Green Africa Mining Alliance, an organization committed to promoting sustainable Bitcoin mining practices across Africa.

Following this productive visit, BFF and Quantum Hash Ventures have agreed to collaborate on a meetup specifically focused on Bitcoin mining, one of the key takeaways from the visit. This event will provide the broader BFF community with a chance to gain valuable insights into the world of Bitcoin mining and explore the potential of stranded energy for value creation in communities where mining operations are situated.

The visit aligns perfectly with BFF’s wider goal of public Bitcoin education and awareness. By fostering a deeper understanding of Bitcoin mining and its potential positive societal impact, BFF intends to empower Zambians to actively participate in the global Bitcoin ecosystem.

BFF is a non-profit initiative raising knowledge and understanding of Bitcoin for people in emerging countries and for disadvantaged people. The Lusaka Bitcoin meetups are part of BFF’s public bitcoin education activities in Zambia. The initiative was founded by Anita Posch, bitcoin educator, author and podcaster. Other bitcoin meetups organised by BFF have taken place in Ghana, Zimbabwe and Nigeria.
