In 2025 we supported the founding of Bitcoin Famba, the first educational community in Mozambique. One year later, Anita, founder of Bitcoin For Fairness, and program director Francis traveled to Maputo to run a series of workshops together with Bitcoin Famba.
Our program included:
Open Workshop for Students, Entrepreneurs and NGOs

On February 27th, 2026, the first four-hour workshop drew an audience of over 80 people.
Inaugural BitDevs Meetup in Mozambique

Bitcoin for Fairness initiated a regular BitDevs Meetup in Mozambique and conducted the Kick-off workshop attended by 70 participants in Maputo on March 7, 2026.
Private Sessions: Journalists & Activists
Alongside the main event, two focused four-hour sessions were held during the week for smaller, invited groups.
The first brought together eight journalists from a local TV station for a Bitcoin introduction. The session covered the basics of what Bitcoin is and how it works, debunking myths and misunderstandings. The goal was to give media professionals a solid, practical foundation so they can report on Bitcoin from a place of genuine understanding rather than hearsay.
The second session welcomed six activists from various Mozambican NGOs, covering a broader toolkit of privacy and resilience tools. Beyond Bitcoin, participants explored Nostr as a way to earn bitcoin for their content, HodlHodl for acquiring Bitcoin without ID, BITchat for staying connected when cyclones and floods knock out the internet, and Maple AI for protecting their privacy when using AI tools. Given the nature of activist work, the privacy-focused thread running through the session felt especially relevant.
Visiting New Bitcoin Circular Economies
Bitcoin Dombo at Maputo Skate Park

On March 6, 2026, we visited the new Bitcoin Dombo circular economy project in Khongolote, Maputo, met the initiator Francisco, and spent sats at several local businesses around Maputo Skate Park.
Lwandi Bitcoin in Ponta do Ouro

On March 6, 2026, we visited Lwandi Surf in Ponta do Ouro to review the Lwandi Bitcoin circular economy initiative and its potential to develop similarly to Bitcoin Ekasi. The project supports 130 disadvantaged children, pays seven instructors a small amount of bitcoin, and benefits from the nearby South African border where bitcoin can be spent at a Pick n Pay.
