Building a Female Bitcoin Community in Zambia: Lusaka Meetup Recap

On December 21, 2024, a Bitcoin meetup exclusively for women was successfully held at Eastpark Mall in Lusaka. Organized by Bitcoin for Fairness Zambia (now known as Bitcoin Zambia), the event provided a welcoming space for women to connect, share their Bitcoin journeys, and exchange ideas.

The meetup began with introductions, where attendees shared how they first became interested in Bitcoin. Among the group of five women, one participant was entirely new to Bitcoin. Her enthusiasm was evident as she asked numerous questions, which the other attendees enthusiastically answered, fostering a collaborative and supportive atmosphere.

Two attendees highlighted their recent accomplishments in tech and Bitcoin education: One participant had just graduated from DadaDevs‘ first-ever African female developers course, where she learned about various aspects of Bitcoin design technology. Another attendee recently completed a SheCodes course, demonstrating her dedication to expanding her knowledge and skills in Bitcoin technology.

The workshop, which lasted approximately two hours, concluded with a productive discussion on future initiatives. The group expressed a desire to build on this momentum by inviting more women to participate. They agreed to organize a special women-only meetup with Anita Posch during her planned visit to Zambia next year.

The event was a success, providing a platform for women to learn, collaborate, and inspire one another in the Bitcoin space. It underscored the growing interest among women in Bitcoin and technology and highlighted the importance of fostering inclusive communities.

Bitcoin for Fairness Zambia was initiated by Bitcoin for Fairness, a non-profit initiative aimed at raising knowledge and understanding of Bitcoin among people in emerging countries and disadvantaged communities. Founded by Anita Posch, a passionate Bitcoin advocate, educator, strategic Bitcoin adviser, podcaster, and author of (L)earn Bitcoin – Become Financially Sovereign, the organization has been holding regular meetups in Zambia since May 2022.
