On March 3, 2026, we visited Bitcoin Dombo, a new circular economy project in the Khongolote area in the northern suburbs of Maputo.
Leaving town, we hit some traffic jams, then continued north along the main road (in the direction of Imhambane), passing through industrial areas on the way to Khongolote.

We met Francisco, the initiator of Bitcoin Dombo, in Khongolote at the mall where Nubelle’s shop is located. The owner of Nubelle took part in our workshop for students, entrepreneurs and NGOs some days before. While there, one of our travel companions found a top she liked and bought it with bitcoin.
Maputo Skate Park: spending sats locally
From the mall we went on to Maputo Skate Park, founded in 2006 by Francisco, who showed us around. A few kids were there skating. We visited a number of nearby shops and spent some sats. Anita also bought biscuits for the skating kids at a newly opened stand.

We then had lunch at a nearby restaurant that accepts bitcoin, and spoke with the owner of a car wash, who is accepting bitcoin as well.
Francisco explained that the skate instructors earn bitcoin, and some of them have opened their own small businesses to add to their income.
It will be interesting to see whether this project gains traction. It is positive that the Maputo Skate Foundation is a long time established social project, but it is located in a suburban residential area with no ocean and no tourists coming to visit – unlike projects such as Lwandi Surf and Bitcoin Ekasi.
